I am currently working on a new book: The maniera at War: Cosimo I de’ Medici and the Imaging of the Florentine Military Epic,, a study of Vasari’s military iconography in the Salone dei Cinquecento of Palazzo Vecchio aiming at integrating the modern scholarship on the Vasarian works with its long-overlooked military component.

Some preliminary results of my work on the Salone are already available. My article “Alla destra del Duca: La figura di Chiappino Vitelli nel contesto degli affreschi vasariani del Salone dei Cinquecento” has been published in the Mitteilungen des Kunsthistorischen Institutes in Florenz, while my first study of Vasarian military imagery: “The Inconsistent Knight: Military and Iconographic maniera in Vasari’s Battle of Marciano” appeared in Source – Notes in the History of Art.

Another piece, “Sofonisba Anguissola, Francesco de’ Medici and Chiappino Vitelli: a Lady-in-waiting, a Prince and a General at the Spanish Court”, is forthcoming in The Medici and Their Archive, Miscellanea of the Medici Archive Project.

Also on the Florentine side, while my edition of the Diario Fiorentino di Agostino Lapini dal 252 al 1596 is due in December 2012.

I have contributed to the Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani (DBI) with the biographic profiles of two of the most important Italian military commanders of the 16th century: Fabrizio Maramaldo (69th volume of the DBI) and Giovanni de’ Medici [Giovanni of the Black Bands] (73th volume of the DBI).
